Holocaust Pictures

Directions: on the back of #27, respond to the following questions about each picture.

Look at the map on the back of your reading. Why do you think all of the death camps were located in Poland instead of Germany?

Picture A - German Soldiers holding signs in front of a Jewish business.

Why might these soldiers be holding these signs? What are people being urged to do?

Picture B - German soldiers beating up a Jewish man in the street

What expression is on the faces of the soldiers? How would you feel if you witnessed this scene on the city streets today?

Picture C - A German killing squad

What expression do you see on the face of the German soldiers now? How is this different than Picture B?

Picture D - Jews and others being unloaded from a train at a concentration camp.

Do you think the people in the photo know what is about to happen to them? Why or why not?

Picture E - Barbed wire fencing at Auschwitz

How easy do you think it would be to escape from a concentration camp?

Picture F - Able-bodied men waiting in line for their duty assignments

Picture G - Jews doing forced labor at Lublin

Look carefully at this picture. What job are these men are doing?

Picture H - a Jewish barrack at a forced labor concentration camp

Are these men being treated well? (Give 2 reasons why or why not.)

Picture I - Women and children waiting in line for the gas chambers.

Why are there no men in this photo?

Picture J - Doors leading into the gas chambers

What do you think the room inside might smell like?

Picture K - A large pile of Holocaust victim's eye glasses

Picture L - a large pile of Holocaust victim's shoes

What would you think if you saw these piles of belongings when you first entered the camps?

Picture M - an outdoor burn pit at Auschwitz for when the furnaces could not keep up with the amount of dead bodies.

Why do you think most camps chose to burn or cremate their victims instead of bury them?
